NEW SOLACE MUSIC
I have been feverishly working on completing a 5 song EP titled "Medusa Crown" planned for a release in the coming months. Currently, it's being mastered by Mike Wells who skillfully mastered "Watzes, Glitches, and Brass: The New Sounds of Vaudeville". This release is a prologue to the upcoming full length CD release of "Gorgon Days", planned for a Fall or Spring release. Here is the track listing below. To hear sound clips, visit the News page and scroll down to where it says New Solace Music: http://www.empcds.com/home.html

1. Delicate Fear
2. Smear The Blood
3. Subtle Vice
4. No Chormosome
5. Ceremony Of The Skull - The Bewitched Mix

This release will only be available as a digital download. I will make an announcement when it's available on CDBaby.com and other downloadable services. Until then, enjoy the clips. I will be posting full length tracks on Myspace soon.

Hi

I hope I haven't allready posted this. My mind does get foggy these days.
Last Feb I opened for Star Hawk at the Women of Widom Conference in Seattle at UNITY CHURCH. It was a wonderful experience. I wrote a few articles about it but I did not have any photos or video tape until this recent one surfaced. I am a major fan of Starhawk. She was a major influence on my visionary ways in the 80's and continues to this day. So is Solace music! It was such an honor dancing right before she did her presentation2/13/09.
It was so fun to get to do something very trancy again and dance to Jerremiahs music (I have been mostly doing traditional Arabic dance with the 6 piece band "House of Tarab"
This clip had to be done in 2 parts
Hope you'll check it out and enjoy it. I also have some new clips about my new online PowerBelly Show.
Kind of Funny . If you don't know what the powr Belly Show is as me? I love to talk about it.

Description:
Vaudeville, Music Hall, Freak Shows, Concert Saloons, Minstrelsy, Dime Museums, and Burlesque; all major forms of entertainment in the late 1800s/ early 1900s. A time where costuming and stagecraft was paramount, and a certain warped fascination with the bizarre and freakish, spliced with titillation and risqué humor, was the order of the day. Here the spirit of this evocative era is fused with dark waltz melodies, glitch electronic sounds, salacious burlesque, and gypsy brass for one of the most unique and lovingly crafted compilations you’re likely to hear this or any other year.

Compiled by Brit DJ/compiler Phil Meadley, with the assistance and advice of Frédérique (who appears on the sleeve), Rachel Brice, Jeremiah & Rachel Soto, and the big neon glitter.

Hey Jeremiah, thanks for your workshops and your playing at Spirit of the Tribes. I just wanted to clear something up about "super saiidi"

D D tk D D tk T tk
tk T * D D tk T *
tk D tk D D tk T *k
t* kt tk D D tk T *

Its the second line here. To keep it in 8/8 time there has to be a rest after the first "T", but it doesn't sound right when you play the rest before the double doum.. What am I missing here? Thanks!

I know, you're thinking WTF?

Four short years ago, I walked into the Soto's house for Solace's release party of "Balance." There I met my drum idol Jeremiah and the wonderful woman Rachel. Countless people I’ve met since then, changing my life in many wonderful ways. But these two amazing artists, brilliant minds, and sharp wits remain close to my heart.

I miss you and hope your new life in Sac-of-mentos is all that you hoped for. Happy anniversary of us meeting.
Description:

Vaudeville, Music Hall, Freak Shows, Concert Saloons, Minstrelsy, Dime Museums, and Burlesque; all major forms of entertainment in the late 1800s/ early 1900s. A time where costuming and stagecraft was paramount, and a certain warped fascination with the bizarre and freakish (spliced with titillation and risqué humor) was the order of the day.

"Tribal Jam Band"...Jeremiah & Friends @ Tribal Fest

Hope this is okay to post here.......

Welcome to info on Tribal Fest’s first ever “Tribal Bellydance Jam Band”.

Here is the deal... We are trying something new this year at TF. An open dance floor with a Jam! The vision is we have a core group of players and people join in and dancers do their thing..

Introducing the “Tribal Fest Jam Band”! Jeremiah Soto of Solace, Jeff Rees from Gypsy Caravan and Mizna and August Hoerr of The Mezmer Society (see bios below)

They will take the Tribal Fest stage and invite anyone who would like to come play with them to come up. Like a great drum circle! This is your chance to come up and jam with some of the most outstanding musicians in the bellydance scene today!

Bring your drum, your zills, your mizmar WHATEVER!!! Join them on-stage and add to the sound and excitement. Don’t be shy!! When will you have the chance to do this again??!!

Everyone is welcome to join in. Dancers, do you have a hubby or partner who plays something? This is their chance to be apart of the show!

Now if THAT weren’t enough excitement, of course it is an “Open Floor Dance Time”!!

Time for all you Tribal dancers to get up and show the world that you can dance as one. Improv at it’s finest!

Doesn’t matter what “style” you do or how long you have been dancing. Come on stage, or in front of the stage for an awesome open floor with what will be the best Tribal Jam Band ever to jam on a stage.

This will go down in history!

Jeremiah Soto
Jeremiah has been composing music since 1986 and has evolved through several genres of music including Industrial, Gothic, Electronic, Contemporary World and currently Middle Eastern Dance music. Arabic percussion has always been a fascination of Jeremiah's and he has studied with renowned dumbek master Souhail Kaspar as well as learned African polyrhythms and frame drum technique from Ronnie Engel. After being in groups such as Kokuein, Eventide, and Still, Jeremiah embarked on a solo
project, thus forming Solace in 1995.
www.soundsofsolace.com/solace/

Jeff Rees
Jeff’s first exposure to learning a musical instrument was playing the accordion and clarinet as a young boy. Jeff’s music took a big turn when he joined Paulette’s newly formed tribal bellydance troupe, the Gypsy Caravan. From travels and research he started playing the zurna from Turkey, the ney and the mijwiz from Egypt, and created the distinct sound of the Gypsy Caravan band. He now plays a vast assortment of horns and percussion, also including the Egyptian rababa, the Indian shruti box, the Armenian dudek, and the Australian didgeridoo.
Playing with Gypsy Caravan, Jeff also started a new band, Mizna, who released their first CD of tribal bellydance music in 2006. Touring the world with Paulette and Gypsy has been an enormously rewarding experience, as he has had the opportunity to play with musicians and for dancers in many other states and countries. With Gypsy and Mizna, Jeff has recorded nine CDs and various films and DVDs. He has made guest appearances on several CDs outside of Gypsy, including playing with Domba, Solace, and Americanistan. Playing music is Jeff’s meditation, his passion, and his art; he plays from his heart and soul.

August Hoerr, Accordionist
August taught himself to play accordion as angsty teenager, and after discovering Middle Eastern music, began working with Tribal dancers in 1999. Discovering a mutual interest in Balkan music and quirky party songs, he formed The Mezmer Society with Onça (Baraka Mundi) in the Autumn of 2007. They have taught and performed at events including Tribal Fest, TribalCon, and Tribal Revolution, and they are scheduled to continue touring throughout the United States. The Mezmer Society is fully committed to spreading the aesthetic of hafla joy as quickly and loudly as possible.
In addition to to The Mezmer Society, August is a member of the quartet Ashes in Order, and maintains a career as an internationally represented figurative painter. He is the president of the Institute for the Advancement of Occultism and Aerophonics (previously Asheville Accordion Club), and he has released albums with the cinematic trio Soora Gameela, and Greek fusion band Makari. August lives in Asheville, North Carolina and is currently working on material for his first solo album.

finally recovered from tribal fusion faire

hi jeremiah,

i never got to follow up with you after TFF. i learned yet another very valuable performance lesson. over extension. every opportunity presented to me sounded great and it was hard not to participate in them all. but it was also hard TO participate in them all. especially all the rehearsals and such.

so instead of having one or 2 solid performances, i was part of 4 acts at that event, and i feel i wasn't able to give each of them my 100%. i know i pulled it off, but i could tell that i wasn't all there for each one, and therefore had to over exert and play harder than neccesary. (which we all know rarely equates to really good playing)

but hey, to have the opportunity in there to play "circle" for you live was worth it. (and i only goofed that up once in the beginning playing the 11/8 bridge instead of the 6/8- but the dancers werent' phased a bit and we recovered w/out crash and burnin)

the last act- africarabian was my brainchild as i couldn';t resist encouraging the african dancers and bellydancers have some sort of 'you got served' dance-off. i really hope you got to catch that act, because it probably won;t happen again- too many dancer egos at a stressful time of us closing our dance studio here meant that the whole thing almost got siderailed.

but they're all pro's and we all put our best faces forward to put on a pretty unique set.

But next time for me, definitley not gonna stretch myself too thin. lesson learned

(here's the perfect example- watching the africarabian set after on video, at one of the call in's for our next rhythm, i gave FIVE tek's instead of 4. FIVE! what is that? and i didn't even know it until i saw it in the video! it's easy to laugh now)

take care and we'll see you soon!
ps- you guys gonna be at either rakassah or cairo caravan?

cheers,
keeth

Spirit of the Tribes Drum class?

Jeremiah,
I saw that EMP will be vending at Sirit of the Tribes in Ft. Lauderdale in May, but what about you and a drum class or two? Last year Karim Nagi had about 80 people in a beginning drum class. If you gave a beginning drum class and then an intermediate/advanced we'd be very happy and you would too!

Delilah's Solace dance/ creative process

Dear Dancers
I want to share a bit about my creative process in regard to a recent belly dance event. I know it's long. If you have time and interest then I hope you find it interesting. I'm sharing it as part of my dedication to teaching woman about dance as well as empowerment.
W.O.W.
I gotta say, I have had a secret longing of performing in the main sanctuary of Unity Church from the very beginning of the founding of the Woman of Wisdom (W.O.W.) organization in 1992. I remember seeing Elizabeth Denis and a few others get the opportunity over the years. I have been a guest in the basement space a few times. However to me performing in the main hall of the church is so symbolic. It represents the notion that belly dance has arrived to be seen for the true beauty and sacredness it deserves in this day and age.
The dream was there but put on hold for other projects. My connection with W.O.W dissolved over the past 7 years as it did for many women. But surprise, I was invited last fall to perform for the opening of Starhawk's talk at the annual women of Wisdom conference in February. In the fall I felt a lot of new energy beginning to collect. Now I see the cosmos reserved this date especially for me a long time ago. Because now the organization is being reborn again. I think we are entering into very hopeful times. For if you didn't already know. . . Feb 14th was the dawning of Aquarius! (40 years since that famous song)
When the Moon is in the seventh house
And Jupiter aligns with Mars.
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars.

Obama is our 44th president and that I am told in numerological order is suppose to be an angelic number.

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Magic crystal revelation
And the minds true liberation
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

So here is this wonderful opportunity set before me. What was I going do since I wouldn't have the live band with me. What to wear? What would I dance to and how would I plan my dance. The room is huge...I think I need a prop. Ugh. My worst skill is choosing recorded music (I admit I am a bit spoiled when it comes to music).
The creative process begins...
I pulled my Ancient Egyptian Goddess costumes from the wardrobe. Beautiful, but hard to spin in. The room is large I need to think big. I contemplated my pink and green dervish rose dance costume I recently wore for Gigi’s Tito show.. Hmmm? This needs to be specific and inspired uniquely for the Woman of Wisdom conference.
I think the song Ya Aziz Aini from the new H.O.T Cd would be appropriate. It has a deeply spiritual dynamic quality but it falls short of my 10 min time slot. What music would work together with it, and in what order? So scrap that. How many steps will it take to reach the alter. I don’t know the logistics and there is no rehearsal. I was stressing. Finally I turned the whole thing over in my mind to a higher power. Obviously, I was given this opportunity after much visualization, so the perfect answer is already waiting up ahead in time and space. I took a deep breath and smiled, because, how well do I know this process? It will be reveled if I just stay rooted in the present moment. Isn’t that what I learned from Starhawk along time ago.
Next, I went into the studio and turned on the stereo. “Ahsas”, by Solace started to play. I listened, “Cool. That works. Next track, Ok ! 3rd track, done ...” It was that simple. Then this old staff I made for a production in 1991 came in to my mind. It had a big roof top owl on the top. Perfect I thought! But where is it, I wondered? After searching 2 basements and one attic, I found it in the back yard under 2 years of heavy ivy. The coper lumme, gauze and yarn wrappings that bound the top of the staff were wet and mossy. The yarn binding at it’s hand hold were soggy and ivy had worked its little clinging parts into the actual threads of fabrics. It had great patina. It just needed to dry out and maybe add a few things. The garden smell was interesting. Shells, indian bells and charms were still bound to it. It was kind of like the collection one might find in a birds nest. Great! “What do you think?” I asked Christine and Brigitte. “It works Delilah.” They smiled in amazement.
This made the costume question easier. The owl is more Roman/Greek looking so I finally I landed on my famous white on white, made of layers of gauze, full skirts and spiral motifs. A few dark green tassel accents had been added a few years back for a past parade theme. The accents tied the staff in perfectly. As a last accent I made a scrappy hair ornament of ribbons and torn gauze to pull it further together. Laura Rose said wrap your self in a white cloak or ton of fabric and come in the character of an old crone come to address the assembly of wise women and remind them of their omnipresent beauty and power.
I listened to the music twice and knew it was perfect. I did not memorize it or even block out the dance. If I did, I could become too attached to doing certain things at certain points in the music but with out rehearsal I was unfamiliar with the intricacies of the venue and obstacles that may present them selves. So I felt it was best to be adventurous rather than attached to plans. I just knew it would work if I made myself totally available and grounded to the present moment.
Routine as it unfolded...
To really get a better sense of this story go now to this web page and you can hear the music I used for this dance Solitude, Khatar, Circle as you continue reading.
http://www.magnatune.com/artists/albums/solace-ahsas/

Part I Solitude
Wrapped in a long white silk veil, I enter from the back of the cathedral with slow measured steps carrying the 6 1/2 foot all owl staff. As I approached the alter I briefly bowed. Then I accented 3 purple carpeted steps and began to pace out a circle floor design, making a stop to salute to each of the four direction along my way. I could feel the owls far reaching wise eyes looking out to the infinite potential in the east, south, west, and north. I end by raising the staff very high toward the audience. Then posed with my familiar at my side. My owl looked at the left side of the congregation and I looked out at the right assembly with the gaze of a seasoned temple priestess. Then I descend 3 steps toward the audience and hand the staff to the founder of Woman of Wisdom, Kris Steinnes sitting next to the famous honored guest of the evening author, writer and political activist, Starhawk. I turned and walked slowly back up to the dais, dropping my white silk veil that covered me on the purple stairs. Hands free now I begin by drawing into my solar plexus the energy of the night with my arms and hands. I marked my territory by pacing the circle once again and spiraled in to the center with dervish turning. I breathed deeply into my core. The spins serve to ground and center myself and part the curtains of time so I may enter my trance. I bring the dance internal and burst out with dynamic vibrations, undulations, and belly rolls of empowerment! Arms and hands strong as they remember sacred rites and blessings from the eons of time immemorial! Then the strong parts of the music grab my body in a cathartic zahr! I end with arms up stretched!
Part 2 Khatar
From the ending pose I slowly melt down to find my footing. Now I enter into a different character. Hip shakes, mix with tiny runs, leaps, pelvic drops, accents, locks, triple steps. I remove a hip scarf revealing my spiral girdle and dance like a matador. Later I begin to hike up my skirts, revealing my feet pounding against the earth and teasingly raise my skirts higher in a ancient ritual moment acknowledging the bawdy, earthiness and feminine power that shall be claimed. This is the sacred intention behind my dance.
Part 3 Circle
This piece is heavy with dynamic and daunting rhythm changes. At this point I need something to hold on to. I pick up my veil from its nest on the carpet and work very earthy counter-balanced spins and flourishes with the veil. The white smooth silk become my wings! The veil would seem to stand still in mid air at my command. What is this? Pure magic! Eventually I’m drawn into the audience and into majestic white owl flight down the main isle!
• Totally a scene from Harry Potter.
Applause! Next they introduce Starhawk. It took seven minutes to read her introduction. She has accomplished so much in her life. Her books are in 25 different languages and in print for over 25 years.
I can't tell you how happy and blessed I felt to be able to open for Starhawk she has been a huge influence on my life.
Her talk was amazing. Very synchronistic to many events in my life lately and the world. I am interested in how to work with community. How to change the paradigm of thoughts that keep us fighting. To save this planet, we have to change. One of her stories was about our reaction to pests in the garden is to kill em, poison them! She talked about Israel/Palestine. She spoke to the unconscious lack of acknowledgment to the long lasting negative repercussions of that poison. Instead of war and killing we need to ask what can I do to I make the garden grow better. We all need the garden. What do I need ? What does the garden need? I thought of our dance community.
Take these thoughts into any conflict, personal or global..
We all must take time to envision the future result we want or we may be headlong into a disastrous result as a direct cause to any immoral action.
My only regret last night was that no one from our belly dance circle was there that I recognized. later it did come to my attention that a couple were there that I didn’t know. My dream is for belly dancers to use the power they find within themselves out in the world. For dance, femininity and the body to regain its rightful place in our culture and traditions. This event could have been great inspiration and resource to those ends.
NOTE
http://www.womenofwisdom.org.
A quote from their site.
Who are we at Woman of Wisdom?

We are an internationally recognized organization that provides diverse and innovative programs offering women opportunities for personal growth and transformation. We are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where all will feel welcome to pursue healing and growth. By deepening spiritual awareness, Women of Wisdom serves to empower the lives of others.

PS. As the weekend has unfolded I taught a teens all day class with 4 other women of different practices. We did belly dance, Chi gun, journal writing, acupressure, art, personal growth psychology work, poetry. I participated as part of the team of instructors but really that all day workshop was a huge value to me. I learned so much from what every teacher brought.
Solace Dance / Creative process by Delilah

It was really wonderful to hang with 7th and 8th grade girls. They were such hopeful inspirations in the new age of Aquarius.

Question about "Circle" on AHSAS

hey jeremiah,

we have an ongoing debate within one of the groups i drum with. remeber at last years tribal fusion faire in SLO, i asked about "circle", and you commented on how it was a difficult song to record...

on the 5/8's, which seems to be a form of the rhythm "shoush", is it truely 2 dumm's on "1 +", the stronger on the "1", or is it just 1 dumm with a reverb kinda thing happening.

sounds more like 2 dumms to me, but some disagree.

small potatoes in this day and age, but just wondering....
thanks, and thanks for the sale. i'm gonna get a cd or 2 that i haven't aquired yet.
--crowhawk

ps- see you soon at TFF 08
pss- jenna says hi to you and rachel

I am always suprised to get an email from Sharina announcing Solace as the winner of the prestigious Golden Belly Award. This award means so much to me, since I am nominated and voted for by the fans.

And to celebrate, Solace and EMP is havin' a sale!! All Solace CDs are marked down for your enjoyment, including the limited edition Opium Head (very limited quantities of this one left).

Click here to take advantage of this sale: http://www.empcds.com/store.html

Thank all of you for being so supportive, this sale is for you!

Hello one and all! It seems I have not been active on the EMP website as well as Myspace and you are right in some ways. Things are in a changing mode. Solace and the EMP label are in fact re-locating to the Sacramento area where we will flourish and grow. I apologize for not updating the EMP site, my webmaster/wife is currently working as a accounts payable clerk, but no worries, we are working on text and will update soon.

I have been writing new music as Solace, but also experimenting with an older sound from my early days. A little more synth pop and industrial which I am very excited about!! I will be working with a good friend of mine who will assisst me in writing lyrics and arranging the vocals. I am considering breaking from Solace for a while and working on this new endeavor which I beleive will be fresh and new to most ears. All ready I have completed 15 tracks for this project, but alas, much production and editing is needed. Don't worry, Solace is still around, but I need a change! You'll still see me at shows and events.

EMP is going through some changes as well. We are re-directing our image to being "The Future of World Music". We will still produce belly dance music, but I am looking for greater diversity in sound and production in all forms of world music. Right now I am setting my sites on Balkan styles and producing more compilations.

Opium Head is almost sold out. I think I have about 70 deluxe versions left. If you haven't bought it yet, now is your chance: http://www.empcds.com/solace-OpiumHeadSpEd.html

I will be out of comission for the next week. But please, continue to contact me here on Myspace or my email address: emprod100@aol.com, I will contact you when things get a bit more re-constructed.

Thank you Southern California for your warmness, hospitality and love. I will miss everyone that has become my friend and family over the years. This is not a goodbye, but a "see you later"!

listening to the song "Blesssings", i believe from the Solace cd "Ahsas", i've been entranced and intrigued by the rhythm being played: adani. well, i guess not just the rhythm, but the composition as a whole: the rhythm, the clapping, and the chanting (call and response).

a drum enemble that i lead just performed tonight, and we opned with adani and wahda, playing the two back to back in different combinations. i recommended to my students and guest drummers to listen to "blessings" to hear what i hear in my head when i/we play that rhythm.

so, finally, my question is- does anyone know the backgground to that song? where from. my guess is there's some relation to guwazi people, but i have nothing to base this on. and what are they chanting. i sing along as best i can, but i'd love to know what the song is about and if there's any transcription or transliteration out there to this.

thanks!!

March Workshops with Jeremiah Soto of SOLACE!

Saturday, March 15
Arabic Persussion and Rhythms Workshop
with Jeremiah Soto of Solace!

Join us for a special workshop day with Jeremiah Soto, the writer and producer of Solace. Jeremiah is one of the most popular American composers for bellydance in the world. He will take you through basic technique, then challenge you with rhythm drills. You'll build your skills, and suprise yourself with new growth!

Classical Arabic Technique :: 12:00 - 2:00 pm
Classical Arabic Style has very specific technique, and aims to create a more defined vocabulary of sounds from the dumbek. This is accomplished by learning specific hand positions and striking techniques. Students will utilize drills to develop left and right hand speed and precision, exercises to improve timing, and drum tricks. Class participants will receive a handout detailing Arabic rhythms and drills/exercises taught in class.

Rhythm Combinations :: 2:30 - 4:30 pm
Students will learn basic Arabic rhythms, then learn ways to combine them to create interesting compositions. Rhythms common for dancers will be the focus, and Jeremiah will show students how to layer rhythms and sounds for "full sound". This class culminates in a composition of the rhythms learned and students will walk away with a drum "song" to practice and play.

Workshops:
$30 each / $55 for both pre-register
$35 at door

Pre-registration form coming soon! www.oasisdancestudio.net
**Pre-registration cut-off date is Wednesday, March 12**

Workshops will be held at:
Art Through Movement at The Oasis ~ Dance Studio & Boutique
3673 E. Highland Ave.
Highland, CA 92346

"Tribal Revolution" DVD Question...

Love the “Tribal Revolution” DVD that I got at your booth at TFF 2007. My favorite is Ariellah dancing to a track credited as “Exiled” from “Ahsas.” While “Exiled” is a smokin’ slow chiftitelli, it’s not that track.

Soo…is it a track from another CD, or a huge remix of “Exiled”…and if a remix, when can I throw you some $$ for it?

Thanks, all!

For those of you who have spent anytime at Casa de Soto, you'll be sad to know that our beloved German Shepard, Uma, left this world this afternoon. Her sweet face and soul searching eyes will be terribly missed. Thanks to Lara who brought her to us around this same time a few years ago. She was a gift to us.

Jeremiah,

Although you may be moving 1000s of miles away, your wisdom, laughter, and friendship will stay with me forever. I will never forget the amazing moment of meeting you for the first time. The lone cassette tape that taught me the first lessons of how to play doumbek, 10 years of trying to learn on my own, actuated in the flesh that moment. You were more than a girl could dream for in a teacher. Smart, open, and funny as hell. This short time of knowing you, I have cherished the times I’ve leaned from you. The things you have taught me have made such a difference. You inspire me to learn.

The times I have actually got to play with you are beyond magic. Even in that small back room at Tribal Fusion Faire last year as you practiced are like a shining dream. Thank you for all of it. Thank you for introducing me to Dave, Ruben, Tim and great groups like Knossos.

Your wicked humor fills me with joy. I have enjoyed the time we’ve spent goofing around. I know now that I must savor each moment spent with you now, as they will be few and far between. I know I’ll have to set money aside because we will be visiting you on that far away coast. You can count on that.

You have enriched my life dearest Jeremiah. Thank you.

Your humble student,

Thanks Jeremiah and David for the classes at Tribe Fusion. I enjoyed them both - although that 9:00 a.m. time slot on a Sunday was a killer!

David - I liked that, well I don't know what to call it, ankle bracelet/shaker thing. Yours was large - necessary in a room full of drums! - but I wonder where I might obtain a somewhat smaller version?

EMP October Offerings

In October, the clocks "fall back," and hail the coming of the dark months. To celebrate the end of harvest and the turning inward, we offer two of our temptable releases to aid in your reflection of the past year.

DARK LIGHT IN THE WAKE OF SILENCE
is the work of Dann Torres, creating under the moniker "Knossos". We are offering this title at $13 ($2 savings). We hope you enjoy its haunting melodies, driven rhythms, and its sometimes industrial sound. Its a perfect soundscape as the days get shorter, and the nights longer.

Listen to sound clips:
http://www.empcds.com/knossos-dark.html

Read the interview with Dann Torres:

STRANGE FLESH
Just in time for All Hallow's Eve, you can have your very own Strange Flesh! No T-Virus here, just great music. This month explore the dark tracks of this gothic inspired release, perfect for the season for only $13 ($2 savings). Strange Flesh features an exclusive track by our featured artist, Knossos. "Cold Room" is a truly chilling experience recalling films like Silent Hill and Saw.

Redemption rhythm?

Hey, all,

I'm trying to count out Redemption from the Ahsas album, and I'm having trouble identifying the rhythm. Does anyone know the name for it? I'm not musically inclined, so it's particularly difficult for me, though I'm working hard to get better. :) If I could know the name, like Chiftitelli or Beledi, that would be a big help to building my choreo. I figured going to the source would be the best idea. ;) Any assistance at all would be GREATLY appreciated!

If you're wondering what happened to the travel blogs, well, to be honest, they were taking too long to write (often over two hours), and I got so behind that I eventually had to abandon them, sorry!

Hey all! I just heard an advance copy of this CD and it is rad to say the least!!!! Not only does it sound great but the constistent beats needed for extended drilling either at home or in class is so awesome!!! They're grouped by BPM's (beats per minute). So if you want a slower consistent beat or something more upbeat/cardio you'll be sure to find something to dance to on this cd! Run, don't walk to get your copy!!! Great job Rachel & Jeremiah!

I have as promised posted the clip of my students and I dancing with you playing Ophelias Dance on youtube. The quality is not so great but I am grateful to have it at all, as we may never have the opportunity again.
Thanks again, and heres hoping we one day find ourselves in the same country!

FCBD General Skills Certification - Sept/07 - Toronto, Canada

Carolena Nericcio and Megha Gavin teach ATS General Skills Certification workshop Sept 7 through 9th, 2007 in Toronto Canada.

Registration online or by phone
http://www.cleopatrasbazaar.com/product_info.php?cPath=53&products_id=1071
1.800.431.0418

The general skills intensive is a 15 hour course, usually taken at the FCBD studio, with Carolena teaching. With only 20 people in Toronto, you will have Carolena and Megha teaching and coaching. You will receive instruction in anatomy as it applies to dance, music theory, instruction in all FCBD steps and concepts, drills, critique and question and answer time.

In order to attend this workshop, you MUST have prior ATS knowledge either via class, workshop or FCBD instructional dvds. This is a must - not an option. Usually a dvd or in-person assessment is required in order to qualify for registration, but this has been waived for this event. Do not disappoint Carolena or Megha - be well prepared with the material. All volumes of FCBD dvds can be purchased through Cleopatra's Bazaar or directly from FCBD.

Once completed, you will receive a General Skills for ATS certificate. It should be noted that completing this certification does not qualify one to be an authorized ATS teacher.

Also included in the registration are gourmet catered vegetarian lunches each day, water and juice for all participants.

Please bring finger cymbals

Class schedule:

I've been having trouble finding out much about the show in London on 3rd June. On the calendar and on myspace it says to email john@magnatune.com which I have done but haven't had a reply. I don't know where in London the show will be and I haven't seen any advertising for it. Is it still happening? Where can I get tickets from and where will it be?

Thanks!

Quick hello from Solace in Ireland

Yes, here we are, in green, rainy, Ireland!

Just a quick note to say hello. We're doing our first performance tonight in Dublin, a short house concert-type of thing. Tomorrow, we're taking a little trip out to the country, maybe to Newgrange...

The band sounds amazing, with both Ruben and Kate here; it's the first time that all the musicians who have played on a Solace CD (Nagari, in this case) are also performing it live!

Those expecting my usual travelogues and photos will have to wait a little bit longer. I'll try to work on one in Scotland next week, and do about one a week, if I can.

More soon!

NEW SOLACE MIX CD!

Coming this April, EMP is releasing Moon Moth Mixes: A Belly Dance Practice Companion, produced by Solace and Blue Damsel’s Rachel Lazarus Soto. The Moon Moth Mixes is a collection of five 13+ minute tracks designed for belly dance class/workshop use and drilling. Each track maintains a steady tempo for the entire length of the song, while the feel of the tracks weave in and out of many moods creating an amazing array of diversity. There are two slow tracks: one frame drum piece and one electronica piece, and three uptempo tracks in varying tempos from slower, to medium, to fast, so that you can progress your class or your own drilling with the advancement of your proficiency. Featured in the mixes are samples from Ruben van Rompaey's re-released Eastern Expressions 2: Gomera, Maduro's Shimmer Sustain, Solace's Nagari, as well as a full length remix of 'Jiva', from Solace's Nagari, and a full length remix of 'Sleeping Sober' from the upcoming (early 2008) Solace Release Opium Head. These mixes were assembled by Jeremiah Soto, the writer/producer of Solace, and may be considered some of his finest work yet. This disc will be available for pre-order on our secure website in the next couple of days: http://secure.infinities.com/commerce/empcds/onlinestore/main.cfm

Sorry, the title of this new CD is not "Goo-Excellence"!

I just want you guys...Solace....to know that you have help me through some trying tests of my path.
I'm a priestess/bellydancer and when my path gets crappy I turn to my music. I grab my veil or zills and I dance along to your cds. Your music (along with lots others) moves me through the turbulance of this hurting planet.
Recently in my life I lost 2 precious loved ones, in one week...my two favorite men, gone....and there have been days where I just put your cds on and let them repeat. Your music soothed my aching heart.
Thank you.....Bless you

Solace in Australia - words and pictures...

Yes, rather than blogging as we went (which would have been difficult), I've created some special pages on my website for a complete summary of the Solace Australian experience (at least from my perspective), including many photos from our trip.

You can read all about it at your leisure here (Clcik to photos to get larger images):

www.timrayborn.com/Australia01.html

This was one of the best travel experiences of my life, and I hope I convey that at least somewhat, though words cannot do justice to actually being there...

APRIL EXOTIC BLEND - CANCELED DUE TO RAIN

Hey everyone -
So sorry to say it, but I am canceling tonight's (April) Exotic Blend. :(
The rain is supposed to last all day and even if it stopped this afternoon, the patio @ the coffee shop would be a big puddle - not so fun to dance in.
Stell Coffee & Tea is much too small inside to move the showcase indoors, so unfortunately that is not an option. :(

There is no EB in May due to Tribal Fest, but June 15 EB is ON!
The theme is DISCO - YAHH!
Hopefully the gorgeous gals I had lined up tonight will join us then...

Thanks everyone for your support of Exotic Blend!
Until June...
XOXO!
Politti

LOL, is there a particular song that you have never seen performed that you would like to see? ie: I imagine Cybele has been done a lot - is there a secret fav song that you would love someone to dance to?
